The sidewalks are buried in plowed snow, so you have to walk in the street. Gotta keep taking the ash out from the wood-fired stove. And it’s dark two-thirds of each day. But that’s not the worst. Just consider …
- Slipping on ice and shoveling snow, especially at the end of the driveway where the city snowplows pack us in.
- Driving in freezing rain.
- Comparing the weather reports to each other and to what actually happens. Rarely does anything match.
- Watching the woodpile shrink.
- Utility bills.
- The house is always cold – and stiff winds make it only worse.
- Things break.
- Frozen pipes or drains.
- Cabin fever.
- The rock-hard ground.

How do you feel about winter?

Sounds just like Northeast Ohio. My wood pile is shrinking too.
As they say, “Half your hay by Groundhog Day,” marking the halfway point. It’s snowing heavily at the moment and I really wish I could just stay put by our fire. Will the phone ring, please, cancelling those two appointments?
For me in Edmonton, Canada it is the dark, unceasing, soul crushing dark.
It’s bad enough living as far to your south as we do, where it still weighs heavily. Do you look to those incremental moments of added daylight at dawn and dusk with gratitude, as we do?
yes we have gained almost 45 minutes of day light over the last month. It is the going to work and coming home in darkness that is the biggest challenge for me.
How well I remember!
I share each and every one of your thoughts. I hate the feeling of endless night. I hate the chill of winter mornings. I hate the feeling of my breath freezing in my scarf. I hate curling up like a pillbug every night, and waking with a sore back from sleeping in that position.
Oh, my!
