ADULTS-ONLY DISHES

Think of a food a child in your life refuses to eat. Or glance back to your own childhood. Something you, as an adult, now find heavenly as you anticipate that first bite.

I’ve long held a theory that there are certain items that should be made adults-only, you kiddies keep your hands away.

We could begin with asparagus, Brussels sprouts, clams and mussels. Coffee, beer, and wine are no-brainers. Maybe even lobster or lamb or Swiss cheese or spinach or salmon.

What would you add to that list?

  1. As a kid I always wanted lobster, clams, salmon, coffee, and Swiss cheese but so much the others. Good asparagus is hard to find unless just picked. Never tried Brussels sprouts until I was around 40. I won’t tell when I tried beer and wine.

    1. We didn’t even know about lobster or clams or salmon or, well, even living far from the ocean, or menu was surprisingly limited. Remember, spaghetti came from a can and frozen peas were a revelation.

      1. My dad would take us on these trips to Maine now and then where we’d have lobster freshly caught. In the local Stop-N-Shop there was huge tank with live lobster. You could pick the one you wanted. Don’t think I’d do that now because of the boiling but I have to admit they do taste good.

  2. Anything spicy, of course. I think I was about fifteen before I started to understand the appeal of a really good curry.

My daughter, though, is incredibly fussy. Right now I’d be happy if I could convince her that soup is not of the devil!

  3. It was a shame that i was so picky as a kid considering the amount of food I consumed. My tastes have changed quite a bit to include some foods from your list. Greens are no longer evil, though salads day in and day out will make Jack a dull boy. It is all in the preparation.
