THE SHORT VERSION

Asked for a short theology, I’m likely to reply I’ve come to the conclusion God has a different way for us, individually and as a society, to be living.

It’s the story I see evolving in the Bible, for one thing. And in much of the history since.

It’s not hierarchy-based, for starters, and something quite different from nations, with their armies, as we know them.

We get a hint of it in the suggestion of the Jubilee, the redistribution of wealth every 50 years for the entire populace.

Maybe you’re already sensing I don’t draw a distinction between here and eternity, not the way Augustine did. It’s the “Kingdom Come, on Earth as it is in Heaven,” as Christians pray.

The long version, of course, is where all the details come into play.

  1. I like that, and agree. But where did we go wrong? I mean, we seem to have been doing it wrong from the beginning, how were we ever going to do better? (You can take that as rhetorical question if you like!)

    1. Let me suggest that the problem arises because we keep operating out of self-centered, self-protective calculations. What’s in it for me, rather than what’s best for ourselves as a larger entity?
The self-protective outlook confines us to our comfort zones, limits our growth, feeds greed and lust … leads to violence.
The other approach (I love the Zen Buddhist distinction between “little Self” and “big Self” ideally finds kinship throughout Creation.
Somehow, though, a “selfless” perspective has to be tempered so it doesn’t crush the individual or lead into totalitarian oppression.
Spiritual practice, as I see it, really is a balancing act. Or, in the Quaker term, a matter of “centering.”

      1. I completely agree! But there’s so relatively few of us who believe this even in theory – so how were we as a species ever going to succeed? Or is the point in the struggle/attempt??

      2. I am one of those that believe completely in that theory. If we would look at what is good for the whole and not just what is “good for me” what a difference it would make. Everyone would win, including yourself.
