Spending a week this time of year in this cabin gave me a taste of Thoreau at Walden. Some of the nights were quite icy, even with a wood fire beside me.

Wreckage on the shore serves as a warning and reminder. The sea can turn violent in a moment. Another harsh winter’s ahead for all of us in these parts. And commercial fishing’s an especially dangerous occupation.

With its large windows and cathedral ceiling, this was my ideal studio. Amazing how dated all that high-tech equipment is these days. Floppy discs? Line printer? Oh, my!

For a decade, I lived on the highest point in the city of Manchester. Sometimes I called the development Yuppieville on the Mountain, but its views of sunsets could be stupendous. There was even a city-run ski lift on the other side of the freeway.

Using the bedroom as a studio meant a more Zen-like arrangement on the ground floor.

The Amoskeag dam sits atop a waterfall. I lived just upstream. — The Amoskeag dam sits atop a waterfall. My apartment was just upstream.

The creaky Boston & Maine tracks paralleled the river.

For three years I lived along the banks of the Merrimack River, a primary energy source for 19th century New England industry.

Wouldn't have minded living in the old North Station, now converted to private residence. — Wouldn’t have minded calling the old North Station, now converted to private residence, my home.

A boulder resembles a round loaf on a breadboard. Maybe it’s just there for giants in the night. The leaves on the ground give an idea of its size.

Quaker 5 170 — The town is proud of the governors who lived here, as well as its role in the Revolutionary War.

Hearing the distant sounds of cannon at the Battle of Bunker Hill to the south, local militia mustered here on Nottingham Square in New Hampshire and began marching to combat. It’s only an hour-plus drive today.

Quaker 5 176 — You can easily pass by the square at the top of the hill. Houses line one side; farms line two others.

An earlier Indian massacre is also remembered. — An earlier Indian attack is also remembered. In scenes like this, I always wonder about the American flags. Shouldn’t they be the Union Jack?
