BUOYS AGAINST A WALL

December 5, 2015October 25, 2015 ~ Jnana Hodson ~ 1 Comment

December 180Each lobsterman has a set of distinctive buoys to identify his traps. This is how the floats look out of the water. Shingle siding adds to the effect.

RAGING COLD

100_2627As the temperature drops, the water gains clarity. Gone is the tannin tint.

Here the river plunges over the Cocheco dam and falls.

Faneuil Hall, Quincy Market, and the Old State House stand close together in downtown Boston. It doesn’t take much to imagine historic figures appearing here.

Or even some celebrity athletes.

There’s always a surprise around the bend.

WATSON AT WORK

November 17, 2015September 20, 2015 ~ Jnana Hodson ~ Leave a comment

Kodak26 048Why let power go to waste? A small hydroelectric station captures a share of the Cocheco River. The Watson Dam itself is a V-shaped design stretched across the stream. I imagine it runs in front of a waterfall.

Maybe the taggers think they’re creating motion pictures? Not all of the railroad graffiti lands on the train cars. There’s a lot along the route, too.

Let's not overlook the old telegraph lines, either.

WHITE ISLAND LIGHT

November 3, 2015September 20, 2015 ~ Jnana Hodson ~ Leave a comment

SCN_0097The Isles of Shoals are a cluster of small islands off the mainland of New Hampshire and Maine. White Island is occupied by its lighthouse and supporting structures.

A HARD MESSAGE CUT IN STONE

October 31, 2015October 29, 2015 ~ Jnana Hodson ~ 1 Comment

100_7933Winged skulls are part of the New England colonial legacy. The region’s harsh environment invoked a stoic outlook on life. The images also inspire a collection of my poems, available by clicking here.

TOWN POUND

October 24, 2015September 20, 2015 ~ Jnana Hodson ~ 6 Comments

In their early days, New England towns built enclosures like this to constrain livestock that had been captured on the lam and impounded. These days such sites are altogether nostalgic.

As another bronze plaque nearby proclaims, this is the 1818 home of the oldest Freewill Baptist congregation in America. Situated near the conjunction of Alton, New Durham, and Farmington, the site has a breathtaking view of New Hampshire’s White Mountains.
