I don’t get it. Every time I’ve opened a page at random to read, it’s been all fluff. Empty talk. No action.
And it’s a publishing sensation?
What am I missing?
(Why can’t I write that stuff, anyway?)
You never know what we'll churn up in cleaning a stall

I ask myself the same questions. π
I *think* it’s called “dumbing-down” and it’s rampant world wide – especially here in the Americas (Canada as well) and we whole-heartedly embrace it – because life seems to be about filling the dis-ease with endless distractions and fluff. The fluffier the better! Hoorah!
Although I have no objections as such to the odd bout of mindless entertainment by way of reading a book that is “fluffy” I find it strange that so much that is available is so poorly written! I long for good old-fashioned grammar and sentence structure – editing and re-editing and detachment for content’s sake. Sadly, I *think* a huge part of the problem lies in the entire self-publication industry; although certainly there are authors who have worked extremely hard and well and have created excellent works, fluffy or not, there just seems to be an overabundance of “hey look at me – I’m wonderful – I’m a writer – published authors.” The dominance of self-centered egoism is on the rise.
Sadly, the commercial publishing houses care only about bestsellers. Quality is secondary, at best. And editors there are often focused more on new acquisitions than in seeing them through to a lasting place on the shelf.
Celebrity “authors,” meaning TV and movie actors, rock stars, fashion models, and the like, are certainly hot with the commercial houses.
Historically, much of the literary world survived in relatively small numbers at the fringe of the publishing houses. With the shrinking of that field, there’s been nowhere else to turn except self-publishing. Alas.
Thanks for an more “informed and informative” brief history of publishing. It’s good to refresh the brain cells – but as I’ve noticed you have some e-books on offer – and since I find your work thoroughly enjoyable and fascinating – and well written – I will be taking a lingering look. π
