SO MUCH FOR ROMANCE

A reporter assigned to cover a large singles scene mixer returned to the newsroom with a telling image.

Three women had been remarking about an earnest young man who wore a tag proclaiming himself an “Incurable Romantic.”

As they snickered: “Sounds like a venereal disease.”

And you wonder what happened to the traditional English love poem? Please think again.

    1. Depends on the circles, I suppose, but none of the women I see would treat the sugary, flowery variety with respect. So what do we do to proclaim our feelings with authenticity? That can’t be the appeal of rock lyrics, can it?

  1. One of the problems is that women are still taught to believe that a man who is willing to share his emotions and be a romantic or vulnerable is not a desirable man. I for one would prefer for men to be able to be emotional.

  2. IF YOU WASH AWAY ALL THE CRAP, THERE IS A PERCENTAGE OF HOMOSEXUALITY IN ALL MEN AND PEOPLE IN GENERAL WANT THAT
“GAYNESS” TO STAY ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE FENCE !

  3. How true! I miss the beauty and grace that language once possessed. That’s partly why it makes me annoyed when they add new words like yolo to the dictionary. We aren’t supposed to be encouraging the defiling of the English language geez..I’m not even British and yet.
As for romance, you are right. It’s as if our minds have become tainted with the asininities of life.

  4. Thank you for liking “The Unexpected.” I think that some people have a jaded attitude about romance because they see broken love relationships all around them. The idea of undying love found in “old-fashioned” love poems does not seem realistic in a world where divorce is common and couples move in together and then move out quickly when problems arise.

  5. Very sad. We’re so long from the romantic era and only a few brave hearts among us are even capable of longing for it.
