It was never a lighthouse

The distinctive 60-foot-tall pyramid on Stage Island was erected in 1825 as a “day mark” to help mariners navigate Saco Harbor, Maine. Think of it as a buoy, they say, even before the gulls.

 

Here’s how it looks from the Biddeford Pool side of the bay.
