TRAILS, AS ROOTS

needing to get out, around noon
I trek about Massabesic
with light snow aground

grateful to have trails
in mixed evergreen and deciduous forest
so close to home

a concert of winter birds
in glinting white

A DAY OF SORROW
AND THANKSGIVING

nesting branches accommodate

SEASONS OF TURMOIL
SEASONS OF CALM

all of the ways I’ve crossed jagged stone
boulder-field and glacial moraine
even bogs and midnight salt flats
mingle in whatever conflicts and trials
I’ll encounter

overhead, the cheeky birds tell me
