EN ROUTE TO STUART LAKE

fossilized mammoth tooth on the mantel

pellucid ice on water
frost-crusted ground

snow pitting rocks above
so shadows shine

air so distilled
mosquitoes sound like airplanes

elk tracks go everywhere
but that’s not the half of it

high in late afternoon sunlight
spiraling filaments glimmer

with endless spidery wonder
I am transfixed by cosmic rays

exposed in conditions the laboratory
cloud chamber only approximates

flecks of gold in white quartz
as one thing holds another
