NODDING TOWARD ALASKA

Sturgeon longer
than rowboats
vaporize in the betrayal

where clouds
would float through millennia
of treetops

mountain spines and lakes
shimmering
in shaggy dreams.

Dealers bid,
persistent as caravans
or migrant bands.

Still,

the first sliver of new moon hatches
in a clear-cut stump-field
paling with frost.
