humbly, I sing of coyote and cougar
in the holy mountain
as well the lamb and the child

whoa! that’s
how expansively we choose health or illness

where many of the materially comfortable
tangled in their position
and possessions
remain troubled


where arrogance
or hunger cannot be satisfied
on any machine
chasing elk to exhaustion in snowfields

where the ferocious speed
of a tarantella
intoxicates, all the same


though I fill the tank
not with gasoline or diesel
not fuel oil
not on this trip, where I’m bound

with olive oil and water
at the trailhead
