stacking firewood
establish a well-drained base
make each element fit snug
hold out the squared pieces for strong corners
voice gratitude for the labor
already spent in cutting and splitting
spent, too, in getting here
examine and admire the grain in your hand
keep going until it’s done
even when the task seems hopeless
is one way to write poems


this aroma of green firewood
is never simply getting the job done

stacked, this little house
appears to have always been here


each stanza
each repetition
a whole poem
rolling into
a whole poem

one, two, three

so many places
to revisit
