IN SUMMER AFTERNOON

miles apart
one girl baled hay in thick summer
another restored the dusky stall

through their fields
one steered a rusting tractor
the other, a thoroughbred

skips over them, now
the enormous animal magnetism
as a testament, perhaps

headed for the barn, all the same
brushing the blades
or rows of stubble
