to the first vista
where the summit finally opens
and forests spread endlessly
so it seems

only a hint of what’s ahead
and below

Deep blue Silver
and Ossipee lakes
off to the south

as we gather
maps rippling in stiff wind

Sloping rock
and then the drop
five hundred feet
where I’m gripping:

I never would have made it
to the pinnacle in snow
after all.

So glad I came back
a month later

to speak of green in the memory
surrounded by words.
