FRESH, AS IN MAY

by Jnana Hodson

strawberry ice
on strawberries
under whipped cream

sugar rimmed
glassware

or on chocolate

which of the lovelies do I think of?

a bucket of strawberries, to the office

too soon, the squirrels are stripping my blueberry bushes
as fast as they ripen
when I’d expected a bumper crop

how slow do I learn
the tricky defenses?
