WOODPECKER REPORT NO. 19

by Jnana Hodson

they called Elvis “king” only because
“god” was too sacrilegious
but as deity he was trapped in vinyl
or his Graceland temple
the carbon-black shadows of proms
and Ford backseats
the chewing gum and white socks
blues as in jeans

shopping lost time forever
following, jerked, yanked along
DEATH MALL

trying to catch up
not my trip but her
sex role difference

L.L. Bean Town
all the other retailers
expensive factory outlets

mostly the happy tourists
are retired-couple shoppers,
their kids finally out of college

~*~

That’s what Woodpecker said.
