THE ONE PERCENT SOLUTION, PART 5

fewer and fewer executives make the Big Decisions

the pharmacist no longer owns his drugstore on the corner
the banker on the corner is no longer its president
the publisher no longer owns the family newspaper
delivered to your doorstep (or computer)
the Big Department Store is no longer unique to your city
or region
as for the factory or the grocery or television or radio
who knows

I’d prefer to deal where I know the president, face to face
call it Socialism, if you will, but it’s certainly not Capitalism
in the Big Sense

where
the clerk who answers the phone can make no decision
but follows policy
the supervisor who oversees the clerk can make no decision
but follows policy
the manager who directs the supervisor can make no decision
but follows policy
the supervisor who reports to a district manager
can make no decision
but follows policy
the district manager who serves an assistant vice president
can make no decision
but follows policy
the assistant vice president at the right hand of the vice president
can make no decision
but follows policy
the vice president under the president who in turn reports
to a vice president of the corporate overlord
can make no decision
but follows policy
and that vice president at pleasure of another president who in turn reports to a Chief Operating Officer who then reports
to a Chief Executive Officer under a Chairman and the Board
can make no decision
but follows policy
that originates somewhere

but not in the shareholders they serve

while concentrating the wealth in the hands of a few
